The so called Bellavista Hill receives this name because
it holds a panoramic view of the Port and of its neighboring hills. This is the place where we will start our tour, visiting Pablo Neruda´s museum inaugurated
in 1961 by our Nobel Prize who was born in 1904. Between poems and diplomatic trips around the world, he managed to put all together nicely with his inspiration building in Valparaiso, “La Sebastiana”, one of his 3 houses in Chile.
To visit this Museum, you can get on a private transportation,
driving by the Avenida Alemania or getting on a “colectivo
39” at the Plazuela Ecuador. Also if you would like to experience a real local adventure get on the bus number 612, at the Avenida Argentina, the main avenue, or in Colon
street.
Once you have enjoyed the visit to the museum, for sure you will be led on this magnificent story of poetry and culture
and visit the entire environment, full of history on this lovely hill Bellavista. The Teatro Mauri will be our next stop in our tour. This theater built in 1945 is right next to the museum, built at the same time than La Sebastiana,
and was united to the house by a terrace that Neruda rented for social activities. Another attraction to visit on this poetic route is the Villa Hispania, that counts with a beautiful castle in the Pasaje Temuco and a B&B nowadays called Puerto Natura. All these buildings had something in common, that they were all built by the same architect Sebastian Collado.
Later on our route we will find walking in front of the cathedral
called Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, also known as “Las Carmelitas”. This was built between 1930 and 1937. Another attraction that talks very well about the beginnings of Valparaiso and its habitants together with their customs is the Museo Organologico, a museum that holds a private collection of around 600 ethnic instruments
that Fernando Ramires Escare has.The Fundación Valparaíso is also on the route towards the city. This foundation is created with the purpose of developing
any Project that triggers an urban renaissance in Valparaiso
as a cultural heritage and tourism city. Next to the Foundation, is the Museo Cielo Abierto, which is an open museum that holds on its walls murals of different famous Chilean artists. Before descending the hill Bellavista holding
all these attractions, we will see right in the corner the the 100 year old funicular called, Ascensor Espíritu Santo, steps away is the image of a Christ, that was built for protection
of the city. And at the foothill, visit the amazing mosaic-square Paseo de Los Sueños and then walk to the main square called Plaza Victoria with its fine water fountain
made in France and the beautiful four season statues surrounding it.
To the northern part of the Victoria square you can visit the main catholic church of the city Catedral de Valparaíso.
Then to the west side you will find the second largest
library in Chile called Biblioteca Santiago Severín and behind it you will find the British Arch donated by the British colony to Chile´s government when the country celebrated its first century .
